John Hopkins University Robberies

Naturally, being a college means you will be taking classes and as a result of that, you will probably become very familiar with the library. After a hard night's study, you decide to walk back to your place. It is at this time that many robberies happen to college students. Here below is a crime map of robberies for Johns Hopkins University from March 2009 to May 2009. The red lines are robberies that happened to students after midnight.

There is a common trend to all these robberies. The first is that they happened around mid night or later. Second, they mostly happened to students traveling alone or in a group of two. Knowing these two key facts, it is easy to avoid being robbed.

Do not travel past midnight. Most universities have a shuttle service to take students back to the residences or to walk with them, know their number and use the service. Also, if you must travel, travel in groups of 3 or larger. A lot of times, robbers try to outnumber students, however they will be less inclined to rob a larger group. Lastly, if possible while traveling, remain in well lit and public areas.

University of Maryland Dormitory Thefts

Living in a dormitory is a quintessential part of the college experience--you're away from the parents, you are with a whole bunch of new people, co-ed halls. While for the most part college is fun (minus all the work) and safe, precautions do need to be made because dormitory theft does happen. Here is a map of burglaries from University of Maryland at College Park during March 2009 to May 2009. The red lines are residence hall burglaries.

There are several ways that you can protect yourself from burglary. First, always lock your doors. Many people have access to the dorms, even those who do not live there. It only takes a few minutes to sneak in when you are in the restroom or in a friend's room to steal a laptop or ipod. Also, make sure you never leave any messages on your board that indicate when you will or will not be in the room. That is how some burgalers find out when to rob you.

University of Delaware Bicycle Thefts

Bicycles can really cut your transportation time down. Instead of taking 20 minutes to walk across campus, a bike can do it in 5. However, this prevalence of bicycles at college also make them tempting targets for criminals to steal. Here is a crime map of thefts from the University of Delaware in Newark, DE from March 2009 to May 2009. The red lines indicate bicycle thefts.

So how can you prevent bicycle theft? First of all always lock your bike and not only with a lock but a lock that is resistant to being cut or broken (think U-lock). Also, try to immobilize both the wheels on the bike with your lock. Lastly be sure to lock your bike in a public location where it is easily seen.
