Police: Hazing Incident Was Nearly Fatal
DES MOINES, Iowa -- Two Drake University students face criminal hazing charges after police said they forced another student to drink so much his blood alcohol was 6 times the legal limit.
Nate Erickson, 19, survived but had a blood alcohol level that was high enough to kill him. It takes so much alcohol to get to that level, it's actually poisonous.
David Kaptain has spent 20 years helping people with alcohol problems. He said college binge drinking is nothing new. Often students don't understand the danger.
'When somebody gets to a point-5, that means a lot of alcohol has been taken in a short time. The brain literally forgets to tell the person to breathe,' said Kaptain."

Crime Continuing To Surge Around UWM Campus
MILWAUKEE -- A rabbi approached by gunmen, an Army reservist nearly robbed on the street, that’s just part of the surge in crime that has happened around the UW-Milwaukee campus in recent days.
A 21-year-old UW-Milwaukee student said that he was walking from work early Tuesday morning when four men pulled him into an alley and robbed him.
When they saw his Army ID, they apologized and let him go, but UW-Milwaukee's chancellor sent out an e-mail on Tuesday warning students to be careful.
Milwaukee police officers are part if a new effort to fight back against a surge in recent street crimes around the campus.
That makes a total of three armed robberies took place southwest of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus early Tuesday, according to campus authorities.
The same four men are believed to have been involved in all three robberies, campus police said."

Royce White Investigated in Campus Theft
MINNEAPOLIS - University of Minnesota freshman basketball player Royce White is under investigation for another crime, according to the team. Gophers spokesman Garry Bowman said White, already suspended following an arrest at Mall of America in October, is being investigated in the theft of a laptop computer from a student' dorm room over the weekend.
'I don't have any real details other than the police are investigating a theft at a dorm and Royce's name came up,' Bowman said.
University of Minnesota Deputy Police Chief Chuck Miner said the laptop was stolen from a student's room at Territorial Hall around 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
The victim of the alleged theft told police she left her room unlocked while taking a shower and returned her laptop was gone. A neighbor across the hall saw four men, one of whom she recognized from news reports as Royce White, in the hallway at the same time."

Off-Campus Assault Incidents Will Not Alter Security Protocol
On October 19th, 2009, a female Bates student jogging in Lewiston reported being accosted by several white males. Lewiston-Auburn Police and Bates College Security are still actively investigating the incident.
The incident occurred at dusk on Summer St., at which time she was approached by a black late-model four-door compact similar to a Honda Accord. Three or four white males riding in the vehicle began harassing her. During the encounter, which lasted several minutes, the suspects verbally assaulted the student while one made an unsuccessful attempt to grab her. After the student threatened to call the police, the suspects drove off. The student recognized a Maine license plate beginning with the letter “J” on the car’s rear.
Although the incident did not result in physical harm to the victim, many Bates students now question whether the streets of Lewiston-Auburn are safe. Maysie Childs ’13, a cross-country runner, said that she prefers to run with her cross-country team because “[t]here are times when I run off-campus alone and have interactions with people that make feel uncomfortable”.
Another student, who wished to remain anonymous, reported than while jogging on College Street on Oct 4th, an apple was purposely thrown at her by an unidentified individual traveling in a car with Maine license plates."

Left with the option of walking down Mission Bell Drive from school, Jessica Collignon has taught herself never to walk alone in fear of ending up like the rest, robbed of their safety and the possessions that once belonged to them.
“It is upsetting that (the area) is scarier than it should be,” Collignon said.
The Middle College High School junior is only one out of many students on campus who rely on taking safety precautions, such as traveling in groups and concealing expensive valuables, when dealing with crime on and close to the college.
Though police officials are scheduled to patrol the area throughout the week, students traveling near the Bus Transfer Center, the site of a majority of the robberies close to the campus, are urged be cautious of their surroundings.
“That area does have some troubles and issues,” Police Services Sgt. Jose Oliveira said. “With the rest of the campus, (there is) not a single problem in the other buildings.”
Two robberies and a grand theft were reported on and near the campus at the end of October, all resulting with no definite leads on the identities of the suspects, he said."
